Cosmetology (COSM)

COSM 101  Cosmetology I Prin and Proc  (12 Credits)  
Introduction and overview of the philosophy of all aspects of cosmetology including infection control, scalp care, shampooing and conditioning, hair design, haircutting, hairstyling, chemical texture services, haircoloring, manicuring, pedicuring, hair removal, and facials with an emphasis on safety and sanitation.
Co-requisite(s): COSM 102  
Course restrictions: Enrollment limited to students in the AAS - Cosmetology program.

COSM 102  Cosmetology I Practical Appl  (6 Credits)  
Introduction to the basic practical services of cosmetology. The practice of the fundamentals of draping, shampooing, haircutting/trimming, haircutting with shears, a razor and clippers, thermal curling, wet sets, manicuring, pedicuring, hair removal, facials, coloring, foiling, balayage, permanent waves, chemical straightening, braiding, cleaning, disinfecting, and infection control. In this class most of the work will be practiced on mannequins and at times volunteer clients at the teacher’s discretion.

COSM 111  Cosmetology II Prin and Proc  (6 Credits)  
Intermediate instruction focused on the following concepts with an emphasis on safety and sanitation (infection control): Montana state safety and sanitation regulations; nail tips and enhancements; light cured gels; monomer and liquids; braiding and braid extensions; wigs and hair additions; skin structure; growth and nutrition; skin diseases and growth; color formulation; properties of the hair and scalp.
Pre-requisite(s): (COSM 101 and COSM 102)  
Co-requisite(s): COSM 112

COSM 112  Cosmetology II Practical App  (6 Credits)  
Continued intermediate application of all aspects of cosmetology with an emphasis on the following concepts: the application of nail tips and enhancements; light cured gels and monomer and liquids; color and lightener application services; haircutting services; braiding and formal styles; Eye Lash perming and tinting, eyebrow lamination and tinting and safety and sanitation (infection control). All students will continue practice proficiency in each content area.

COSM 121  Cosmetology Instructor Train  (4 Credits)  
The proposed Instructor Training Courses are designed to prepare licensed cosmetologists, estheticians, manicurists, barbers, or electrologists to become qualified instructors in their respective fields. This 650-hour program meets the minimum curriculum requirements set forth by the Montana State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists and emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching experience.

COSM 122  Cosmetology Instructor Pract  (6 Credits)  
The proposed Instructor Training Course is designed to prepare licensed cosmetologists, estheticians, manicurists, barbers, or electrologists to become qualified instructors in their respective fields. This 650-hour program meets the minimum curriculum requirements set forth by the Montana State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists and emphasizes practical teaching experience.

COSM 201  Cosmetology III Int Prin & Pro  (6 Credits)  
Intermediate instruction of haircutting, nail structure and growth, nail diseases and disorders, manicuring, pedicuring, facials with an emphasis on safety and sanitation (infection control) to be included in all instruction.
Pre-requisite(s): (COSM 111 and COSM 112)  
Co-requisite(s): COSM 202  
Course restrictions: Enrollment limited to students in the AAS - Cosmetology program.

COSM 202  Cosmetology III Int Pract Appl  (6 Credits)  
Continued work and practical hours needed to demonstrate competency in the required salon management, hour requirements, and safety, cleaning, and disinfecting (infection control) measures.

Co-requisite(s): COSM 201

COSM 211  Cosmetology IV Adv Prin & Proc  (6 Credits)  
Continued work to advance proficiency in all cosmetology skills, with an emphasis on safety and sanitation practices (infection control), as well as a focus on readiness for the state board exam. Review of all Milady chapters in preparation for state board testing.

Co-requisite(s): COSM 212

COSM 212  Cosmetology IV Adv Prac Appl   (6 Credits)  
Continue advancement towards proficiency of all cosmetology skills, with an emphasis in safety and sanitation practices, as well as a focus on readiness for the state board exam.

Co-requisite(s): COSM 211

COSM 221  Cosm Instructor Advanced Train  (4 Credits)
